Keeping Your Website Effective

Whether you have an existing website or plan to develop one in the near future, it is important to have an understanding of the characteristics that can make your website effective.

KEEP YOUR WEBSITE ORGANISED

Try to avoid making your website overwhelmingly ‘busy’. Too many pictures, fluorescent colours and text will put off your users and they will more than likely head for the ‘back’ button and try elsewhere. Using natural colours, creating contrast between the background and foreground along with using your colours consistently throughout, will appeal to your users and keep them on your page.

HAVE GOOD NAVIGATION

Ensuring that your visitors can get around your website easily without getting lost is vital. It is important to have a link to get back to your homepage and/or a table of contents on every page. Remember not all users arrive on your home page to begin with.

ALWAYS PROOF READ YOUR CONTENT

Poor spelling or grammar automatically affects your credibility I can’t tell you how many websites I see daily being effected by this. If you have managed to over-look simple spelling and grammar mistakes, then it tells users that attention to detail is not one of your strong points and makes them wonder what else you over-look, clouding their judgement immediately and persuading them to go elsewhere for the services that they require.

MAINTAIN DESIGN CONSISTENCY

A website which changes designs, backgrounds and navigation systems whenever you click a link has the tendency to make your users feel slightly lost. Consistency doesn’t have to be boring, choose two or three colours and stick to them throughout.

KEEP CONTENT FRESH

Users are more likely to return to your site if they find new and interesting material that is being updated regularly. Posting articles, upcoming events, latest products etc. will persuade your users to return to your website in the future.

MAKE IT COMPATIBLE

It is important that your website is accessible and usable across all major media, including popular web browsers and mobile devices. Some users may be accessing your website via an outdated browser, some users may have impairments, and therefore, ensuring that your website is compatible for all is essential.
