A beautifully designed piece of print promo speaks volumes in today’s digital world, and doesn’t have to cost the earth.

1. DIRECT MAILERS

No, they’re not dead. Sending postcards, catalogues or even a book sample of your work still gets your design in front of potential clients. Think quality over quantity, though – both in terms of direct mail itself, and who you choose to target with it.

2. OFFER TUTORIALS

Want to show off your design skills in the pages of a website or a magazine? Have a think about tutorial writing you could bring traffic to your website, get your name seen or even make a bit of cash.

3. BUSINESS CARDS

Bespoke, high quality business cards are a solid means of promoting yourself when out and about. Companies like Vistaprint are great for cheap, short runs, and mean you can show off your designs and leave contact details at the same time.

4. POSTERS

Here, again quality is the key – not just in the production, but also in the target list. if you’re looking to sell posters, do small runs of high quality prints. You can then sell them directly yourself using a website like Folksy or even submit them to websites like Fab.

5. VOLUNTEER SOME ARTWORK

If you find out about a charitable project or gallery exhibition happening that requires exhibitors, then get involved. You might even get a couple of prints for free if you donate an artwork and of course you will benefit from the exposure.

6. GET IN THE NEWS

If you do help out on a charitable project, or offer up some free brushes, templates or other deisgn elements, then tell people about it. Especially the deisgn press. Craft a press release, send some pics and then follow up with a phone call.
