Digital Self Promotion

When promoting brand ‘you’ there are six sure fire ways to get noticed from newsletters to social media.

1. SOMETHING IS BETTER THAN NOTHING

Even if its just a holding page with some contact details, and a polite message saying you’re working on a full website, something is always better than nothing. If you can register the URL, all the better – it’s the space you can pop up on your business and social media accounts.

2. LOOKING GOOD FOR LESS

Websites like Cargo and Krop are all easy to use, easy to update, well designed and enable your work to shine through. In the long term they might not be as flashy as a bespoke portfolio website, but they’re perfect for people on a budget.

3. BE SOCIAL

Promote your portfolio everywhere, but especially via Twitter, Facebook and other social media channels. This means making sure it is prominent in your ‘About’ sections, and referencing it in your postings. Don’t assume that people will automatically click through – making doing so unavoidable.

4. KEEP THE CONVERSATIONS CONSTANT

Don’t just tweet once in a blue moon – your social media timelines should be busy places, and you should look to post at least four to five times a day, preferably more – provided you have something interesting and relevant to say, of course. Promote your self, but try not to over sell.

5. MAKE THE RIGHT SELECTION

Choose one or two of your best pieces and use these as a launch into your portfolio. Attach them to email footers, use them as your avatar, link to them and drive as much attention to your folio via them as possible.

6. DON’T FORGET THE OLD SCHOOL

It may be all about social media these days, but actually emails and newsletters can be just as likely to drive traffic to your portfolio website from potential clients as a tweet or Facebook post. think of these as news updates, where you talk about what new projects you’ve been working on.
